The founder, Dwight Powell, has been involved in missions for 30 years.  His first mission trip was in 1978 into Mexico City.  At that time he was serving as vice president of Bread for Children an organization that published literature in several languages and circulated in many countries of the world.  In the 1970's he founded a church and Christian school in Arcadia, Florida.  He was the founding pastor of another church in Okeechobee, Florida.
In the late 1990's Dwight moved to Naples, Florida where he worked with New Hope Ministries.  The expansion of missions was one of the main focuses of the church and since that time he has assisted over 100 people in obtaining passports for mission trips.  The trips have been to the Soviet Union, China, Guatemala, Mexico, Africa, and Haiti.  The connection to many mission organizations has formed a net-work with Living Waters Teaching in Xela, Guatemala, People for Missions in many nations of the world, International Cooperating Ministries, and Love a Child. Through his efforts medical teams, construction crews, and evangelical crusades have been an ongoing part of the ministry.

The partnership with International Cooperating Ministries has resulted in the building of churches through New Hope Ministries in India, Cuba, Viet Nam, Russia, and several countries in Africa.  Through the experiences and observation of needs in these countries, HMI was formed.  It's purpose was to directly impact and improve the conditions of those crying for help.
